Artists' Statement
Erica Small-Coffee is a practicing artist and educator from Moncton, New Brunswick. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University, and a Bachelor of Education - Fine Arts Specialist degree from both NSCAD University and Mount St. Vincent University.
Her work is primarily informed by the concepts of performative gender norms, popular culture, and nostalgia. She creates medium scale watercolour drawings which include familiar, yet dreamlike imagery evoking impossible liminal spaces akin to memories.
With an extensive printmaking background, she has chosen to return to more immediate processes, while still working with themes like mechanical reproduction, creating the images first digitally, and transcribing them to paper by hand.
Although her career focus has strayed from exhibiting regularly due to a rigorous teaching schedule, she has continued to create for more than the past twenty years.
